NILPS

Celebrating, conserving and supporting Orkney's North Isles.

Project Overview

After working alongside a partner agency, Resolve Creative, to create a logo and corporate identity for the NILPS project, we then won a tender to design and develop a brand new website to promote a range of projects that aim to celebrate, conserve, explore and equip Orkney’s north isles and their communities.

Background

The North Isles Landscape Partnership Scheme (NILPS) is a five-year range of projects that aim to celebrate, conserve, explore and equip Orkney’s north isles and their communities. NB initially won a competitive tender in partnership with Resolve Creative to create the NILPS brand and a website specification. Following this initial stage, and confirmation of the rest of the scheme’s funding, NB were engaged to design and develop a vibrant and engaging website that encapsulated the schemes objectives, and the north isles themselves.

Challenge

One of the main challenges of this project was to create content for projects which hadn’t yet started. Due to the nature of the scheme, some projects wouldn’t be starting until year two or three. In addition, NILPS staff needed to be able to easily update the website so that it could evolve in-line with the scheme’s ongoing progress.

Solution

We worked closely with our media partners in Orkney, K4 Graphics and Start Point Media, utilising a bank of pre-existing photography of the isles that would complement the NILPS brand and accurately represent island life and culture.

In addition, Start Point Media were able to create a short introductory video explaining the schemes objectives by using existing footage from the Orkney Digital Media project (with permission from HIE Orkney).

The design itself uses the characteristic curves from the logo throughout various elements on the website to create a coherent feel to the whole site.

Results

The website has proved to be a valuable online resource for the NILPS team to broadcast its projects and gather support and interaction from local communities. The content management system makes it easy for project details, news and events to be updated regularly and the overall look and feel of the site has been well-received from north isles residents, stakeholders and the wider public.
