IRN-BRU's makers A.G. Barr sought to standardise brand websites across their range of drinks including the iconic IRN-BRU brand. The website for Scotland's "other national drink" is cleverly designed as an ecommerce and marketing platform with space for prize draws, email signups and engaging content celebrating the brand. The eye-catching visual appearance is inspired by and faithfully follows the IRN-BRU brand as defined in the brand guidelines. The site is optimised for sales and promotion of limited edition products and merchandise.

Background

Scottish drinks manufacturer A.G. Barr wanted to develop excellent new websites for each of its brands, including IRN-BRU, standardising the online approach across the business and making the most of digital marketing opportunities. The ambition for irn-bru.co.uk was to create a high-performing, fresh-looking ecommerce and marketing site that represented the brand and delivered commercial benefits. This included the desire to collect more first-party data via prize draws and promotions, helping raise awareness of the product, reinforce the brand identity and build customer relationships.

Challenge

The new website had to showcase IRN-BRU's brand identity, capturing the imagination of site visitors, while also delivering a seamless and enjoyable user experience. irn-bru.co.uk is a core part of the brand's digital marketing portfolio, engaging visitors, encouraging participation in promotions, and gathering valuable customer data. The challenge was to provide a site with excellent technical functionality while also reflecting the fun and vibrant IRN-BRU brand.

Solution

NB's team tailored the design and editability of a Shopify theme to ensure brand identity was at the centre of every aspect of the website. Our technical expertise ensured maximum flexibility, giving greater control over page layouts and providing scope for creativity. This enabled us to create a sleek, high-performing site packed with engaging content including a selection of iconic IRN-BRU adverts. To deliver excellent marketing capaibilities, an email marketing platform was configured to integrate with Shopify and collect sign-ups from prize draws and competitions.

Iconic design

IRN-BRU's famous identity inspired the project, and the famous colour scheme is present throughout the bold design. To deliver seamless user-experience, the new site performs better while providing a more modern, visually appealing experience in line with the distinctive brand guidelines.

Memorable IRN-BRU adverts

NB's team carried out deep research before developing this site, which led us to discover that many core audiences enjoyed watching legendary IRN-BRU adverts. We suggested a dedicated page on the site featuring videos of past ad campaigns, including the mischievous but memorable Snowman adverts.

Explore the range

With an increasing number of drinks sitting under the IRN-BRU brand, it was important to showcase the full range of products and allow visitors to find the drink they love.

Merchandise

Upgrading the site to a Shopify store allows limited edition products and merchandise to be sold, with the option to easily add other products. The first campaign in December 2023 promoted IRN-BRU Feasting Trousers for the festive season, which promptly sold out!

Following the site's launch in December 2023, IRN-BRU promoted the sale of limited edition Feasting Trousers for the festive season. Since then successful prize draws have been hosted on the website as well as promotional campaigns for the IRN-BRU Carnival, limited edition XTRA flavours, and a hilarious set of video ads celebrating Scotland's optimism ahead of the national side's Euro 2024 campaign.
