We are delighted by the success of the live webcam broadcast of the Lerwick Up Helly Aa.
Available from both the Up Helly Aa website www.uphellyaa.org and www.shetland.org, the coverage was watched by thousands of viewers throughout the world. Those who tuned in could not only see the procession and burning, but could also hear the music, singing, shouting and, of course, the inevitable wind. As one emotional ex-pat Shetland commented, "All that was missing was the smell of paraffin".
Andy Steven of Promote Shetland - the man who set up and ran the coverage - says that there will be many more innovations next year now that we know how much demand there is for live, worldwide coverage of this spectacular event.
