  • Kirkwall and Lerwick prove to be destinations worth marketing

Destination marketing is a fundamental part of what we do at NB, so we were very happy to hear that two town centres we work with have triumphed in a recent tourism award.

Kirkwall in Orkney and Lerwick in Shetland came winner and runner-up, respectively, in the search for Scotland’s Most Beautiful High Street. Kirkwall earned 21% of the overall vote, with Lerwick just behind on 18%, in the poll which was jointly run by Scotland’s Towns Partnership and the charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.

We have been actively involved in the promotion of both of these town centres. We worked with Kirkwall BID – the business organisation that promotes Kirkwall as a business improvement district (BID) – to create their website. This is a showcase for the town’s shops, services and attractions, as well as a place to share news and events. We created a similar website for Living Lerwick, another BID district, which is run by local business owners.

Commenting on Kirkwall’s win and Lerwick’s second place in the vote for Scotland’s Most Beautiful High Street, NB managing director David Nicol said: “I’m personally delighted to see Kirkwall and Lerwick being rated as having the most beautiful high streets in Scotland. We have many clients in both towns – indeed on the streets in question – and we know how hard they work to provide a great service to local customers all year round. We're particularly pleased for management teams at Living Lerwick and Kirkwall BID who put in huge efforts.”

As well as working with Kirkwall BID and Living Lerwick, NB also works with a number of individual businesses in Kirkwall and Lerwick, helping them to create websites and digital marketing strategies to promote what they do beyond their island shores. Examples include Ola Gorie Jewellery and Orkney Distilling in Kirkwall and The Shetland Fudge Company and Thulecraft in Lerwick.
