Mark joined NB in March 2024 as a Web Developer, having decided the previous year to embark on a career change.
He worked in a variety of previous roles – in libraries, theatres, cinemas, cafes, and briefly as a postie in Lerwick. His interest in programming was first ignited when he took on the responsibility of running a weekend coding club for young people in Glasgow libraries, teaching mostly Scratch and some beginner Python.
In considering a new career, Mark wanted to find something that would satisfy his love of learning and his aptitude for logic and problem solving. Having settled on software development as the path that excited him most, he undertook an intensive four-month coding bootcamp in Glasgow, and then gained industry experience working on a BBC web app called RowZed – before joining the team at NB.
At NB, Mark has become an important core member of our internal web development team, handling website and hosting tasks whilst also providing efficient handling of support requests to our range of existing clients.
Mark is from Glasgow but moved to Shetland in the summer of 2021 with his partner. They had been making regular holiday trips to Unst for years before deciding on a permanent move away from the city – and it’s the best decision they ever made.
Mark has an academic background in philosophy and literature, and has never lost his deep interest in those subjects – although he doesn’t have time to read much these days. When he’s not at work, you’ll usually find him on family walks, cutting peats, birdwatching, or playing football with his toddler in the garden.
