June 11, 2014

We are delighted to announce the launch of a high profile Orkney website design project for Orkney Food and Drink.

The site, available at www.orkneyfoodanddrink.com, promote Orkney's fantastic food and drink produce throughout the UK and beyond.

Edgar Balfour, development manager for Orkney food, drink and crafts, said: "Given the economic significance of food and drink for Orkney, we felt it was vital to have a dedicated on-line presence for the sector. The new site is attractive, easy to use and will act as the first port of call for anyone looking to find out about Orkney food and drink, or learn more about our member and associate businesses. It'll also be the place to keep up to date with news on food and drink related events and activities in Orkney, such as this year's Orkney Food Festival."

Some interesting features include:

1. Responsive Design

The site uses 'responsive design', meaning that the layout of each web page automatically adapts to suit smaller screens on smart-phones and tablets. About a third of the visits to most websites are now from mobile devices, and responsive design ensures that every website visitor can enjoy using the site easily. You can see a very visible example of responsive design in action on the new homepage. Here, we show impressive full screen images to visitors using computers with large monitors, but a different page layout to those visiting the site on their phone. (Please do visit the site on different types of device to see this for yourself)

2. Member Database

The new site includes a database of producers (full members) and outlets (associate members). Each listing includes an overview of the business, plus contact details, a gallery and a location map. This database will be kept up to date, and it is easy for Orkney Food and Drink to amend, add or remove members as required.

3. On-line forms

The site includes various on-line forms:

Contact form

Entry form for Orkney Masterchef competition

Voting form for Orkney Food and Drink Awards

4. Blog

The integrated blog will allow Orkney Food and Drink to post fresh and relevant content frequently, to help keep people informed about the latest developments in the sector.

5. Content Management System

The site includes an extremely easy-to-use content management system to enable Orkney Food and Drink to update content (including photos and videos) as and when required, without further input from NB Communication.

There are many other features in the site too, so please do find some time to take a look around. If you have any feedback, please do let us know.

NB Communication wishes to thank Colin Keldie of K4 Graphics for his photography and Dave Flanagan for the copy-writing.
